Standardizing the brokerage in 18th century New York, the American Stock Exchange formalized the equity trading that usually occurred in coffee houses in the same city. During the inception and rise of the exchange, the New York Curb Exchange was called the New York Curb Exchange before following a monumental success by almost doubling its stock values, thereby changing its name to the American Stock Exchange. AMEX was once one of the largest stock exchanges in the entire United States, and in recent times was annexed by the New York Stock Exchange Euronext.
Formed in 1971, NASDAQ is known as the first stock exchange that offers online options and automated methods in its transactions, indeed a modern and advanced business for its time. Though initially hindered by several problems for its hefty endeavor, NASDAQ established itself as the world’s first electronic stock market. NASDAQ has had a good long run, at one point having one of the highest trading volumes in the United States and connecting to the London Stock Exchange, creating an international linkage of capital markets. Dealing mainly in technology-related transactions and corporate exchanges, NASDAQ has almost 4,000 companies listed. Some of the most well-known stocks it holds are the tech giants Microsoft and Apple.
The Standard and Poor 500 is a stock market index meant to flagship the 500 commonly traded stocks in the New York Stock Exchange to represent the whole stock market. Monitoring the entire market was unfeasible, so instead, the S&P 500 index stands as a substitute in observing the economic status of the stock exchange markets. Upon surpassing the market capitalization values of $10 trillion, the S&P 500 index constituted of the following sectors; Information Technology (17.8%), Financial (15%), Energy (12.7%), Industrial (11.3%), Consumer Staples and Discretionary (21.2%), and the remaining portion for others.
Investors are encouraged to closely observe the S&P 500 index, as the latter acts as a determinant of the United States economy's economic state.
New York Stock Exchange is a previously private firm that only recently became a public entity only in 2005 after an extended 200 years of its establishment. The NYSE is considered the largest equities-based stock exchange in the world based on a total market capitalization of more than $24.5 trillion in 2021. Dubbed as the “Big Board,” the NYSE houses many foreign-based companies included in its list. Today, transactions are conducted through electronic machines automatically, though traders dealing with large volume deals prefer floor trading.
